On the Atlantic coast of Morocco lies Safi, a city whose name has become synonymous with pottery. Here, clay is not only a material but a cultural identity, shaped for centuries into plates, bowls, tagines, and decorative art that now travels the world.
Ancient Roots
Archaeological evidence shows that pottery was practiced in Safi as far back as the Roman era. The indigenous Amazigh people laid the foundation for this tradition, which later absorbed influences from Islamic art, Arab craftsmanship, and intricate geometric designs. Safi’s secret has always been its high-quality local clay, rich and durable, making it ideal for fine ceramics.
A New Chapter in 1875
The modern identity of Safi pottery took shape in 1875, when Mohammed Langassi, a master potter from Fès, introduced the art of faience—polychrome lusterware with dazzling painted finishes. This fusion of Fassi expertise and Safi’s natural clay transformed the city into a world-renowned center of ceramics, sometimes called “the heart of Moroccan handmade pottery.”
The Signature Style
What makes Safi pottery instantly recognizable is its deep cobalt blue, achieved by blending cobalt oxide with a white glaze. Alongside this, artisans paint geometric, floral, and calligraphic patterns, creating ceramics that are both functional and artistic. From everyday tagines and bowls to ornate decorative pieces, each object reflects centuries of tradition and the hand of its maker.
Safi Today
In the 20th century, artisan guilds evolved into craft cooperatives, ensuring knowledge passed to younger generations while supporting local livelihoods. Today, Safi remains Morocco’s pottery capital, with countless workshops, kilns, and artisans producing both traditional and modern designs. More than an industry, pottery here is a way of life—a vital part of the city’s cultural and economic heartbeat.
